Varroa destructor
All control treatments and methods!
In the Netherlands the varroa mite (Varroa destructor) forms a serious threat to beekeeping. In the past this mite was successfully controlled with Apistan treatments, but over the years the mite has developed resistance against it. To find alternatives against varroa mites, the researchers of bees@wur of Wageningen UR investigated many control treatments and methods. The one being effective the other not, or only in combination with other treatments or methods. The research is still in full progress and provides us with numerous data and knowledge concerning the control of varroa.
This site presents the most important control methods. The key entry is “Integrated Pest Management”. This stands for the use of the right environmentally friendly treatments or methods at the right moment. The choice for a certain treatment or method is always based on the number of mites present inside the hive and depended on the time of the year.
Every beekeeper must be aware of varroa control throughout the year, because bee colonies simply can’t manage the problem on their own. A good year-round plan is the basis for effective control. On this site you will find a year schedule which you can use when planning your varroa control activities.
